Waste materials are generated on our campus continuously. Several campus departments, including Facilities Maintenance, Property Control and Sustainability, and EH&S coordinate with the campus community to recycle these materials. Listed below are some common wastes and the proper procedures for handling them:
Paper
Blue bins to collect office paper, newspapers, magazines and cardboard are stationed in all campus offices and lobbies of several buildings receive paper waste. Confidential documents can also be shredded and subsequently recycled. The paper materials are sent to an off-site paper recycler
Computers
Used computers and other electronic devices are collected for recycling. To recycle or dispose of these materials, fill out a surplus form, available from Property Control at 878-6835.
Ink Cartridges
Almost all types of ink cartridges are collected and sent to an off-site recycler, such as Cartridge World. This includes cartridges from fax machines, ink jet printers, laser printers, copiers, etc. Cartridges can be dropped off in the appropriate cartridge recycling bin. These bins are located throughout the campus as each department has been issued a bin.
Other Materials
In addition to the above items, the campus collects and segregates many other items for recycling or reclamation:
Food waste from Food Services operations
Spent cooking oil
Leaf and woody debris
Spent vehicle tires
Concrete rubble and other construction debris.
